| Crab Claw Island is a magnificent part of the Northern Territory located on the Cox Peninsula, just 135km southwest of Darwin by road or 35km by air. Truly unique, it is an island accessible by road except on extreme high tides. Crab Claw Island is home to Crab Claw Island Resort – a complex of elevated cabins overlooking a white sandy beach connected by walkways through the trees, refreshing swimming pools, an open air restaurant and bar with views across the harbour, shady camp sites, private boat ramp to access the fabulous fishing, all surrounded by wildlife and pristine natural beauty. Crab Claw caters for those who love the outdoors. You can go bushwalking around the island, hunt for monster mud crabs, go for a dip in one of the two refreshing pools or - when in season - watch the turtles lay their eggs on a nearby beach. However, Crab Claw's main attraction has got to be fishing. The island is a fishermen's dream. A popular way to spend the day is to fish until dusk, and then eat your catch. With over 30 species of fish in the harbour, including Barramundi and crab, you're spoilt for choice when baiting dinner. Fishing Bynoe Harbour hosts some of the best fishing grounds in the Northern Territory. Five islands are nestled in the mouth of the Harbour and the harbour coastline is made up of mangroves, fringing and sub tidal reefs, sandy beaches, seagrass and mud flat/sand flat habitats. An artificial reef constructed from the former Crab Claw Resort Jetty that was damaged severely by a cyclone and subsequently demolished is now home to huge Jewfish, this is accessible by small boats. The tidal creeks and gutters play host to the famous Barramundi, Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Bream, Prawns and Mud crabs while Snapper, Mangrove Jack, Javelin, Tarpon, Mackerel, Trevelly can be found around the oyster rock outcrops. The in-shore and off-shore reefs are great places for larger specimens of Golden Snapper, Coral Trout, Jewfish, Mackerel, Tuna, Trevally, Groper, the odd Red Emperor and all of which will put up a magnificent fight. Don’t have a boat? – You can hire one of our 4m aluminium edge trackers, powered by a 20hp Mariner Outboard. These boats are surveyed for four people and are available for full day and half day hire. If you would like to take your catch with you we are happy to cryovac and freeze your fillets to ensure they are kept fresh and tasty. Boating Crab Claw Island is a perfect place to launch your boat and access Bynoe Harbour, Fog Bay and on to the Arafura Sea. Located at the base of Bynoe Harbour, Crab Claw Island is sheltered from all but the worst of the tropical weather. Our private, concreted boat ramp enables you to easily launch and retrieve your boat, even when it’s windy. Bynoe Harbour is fed by the Charlotte and Annie Rivers, the Milne Inlet, McKenzie Arm and the Madford Inlet. These waterways are shallow and full of aquatic, land and aerial wildlife and well worth a visit. Indian Island dominates the mouth of the harbour and is known for its magnificent Barra at low tide but a little further out you will find Bare Sand and Quail Islands. Quail Island is the RAAF bombing range, so it’s best to stay clear but Bare Sand Island is easily accessed. It is a casual 45min walk around the island which hosts abundant bird life. It is also a well know hatchery for the Flat Back Turtle that nest there April – September. |
