Melbourne Water

Melbourne Water is the caretaker of river health along 8400 kilometres of rivers and creeks within the Port Phillip and Westernport region, which includes Werribee, Maribyrnong, Yarra, Dandenong and Westernport catchments.

Our rivers and creeks are popular places to visit and help to make Melbourne a more liveable city - more than 100 million visits are made each year to our rivers, creeks and wetlands.

These waterways support more than 1860 species of native plants and 600 species of native animals. Some of our wetlands are internationally significant supporting rare and endangered wildlife.

We work with stakeholders and the community to carry out a range of programs that improve the health of our rivers and creeks.

Brimbank Park
Brimbank Park was opened in 1976 as part of the Maribyrnong Valley Park. Fifty-five metres below the western plains, the Maribyrnong River flows at the base of a high bank. This turns the park into a big amphitheatre, ideal for scenic walks, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, kite flying, and picnicking.

Jells Park
Jells Park is at the hub of a network of parklands linked by the Dandenong Creek. Nestled in the heart of suburbia the park is abundant with native plants and wildlife and is a diverse recreation destination for the whole family - you can experience it all in Melbourne's backyard. Fish from the jetties on the western side of the lake (outside of the conservation area) for carp and short-finned eels, or if you’re lucky you might even land a redfin eel.

Patterson River
The Patterson River is a unique man made waterway. As one of the few designated safe harbours on the city side of the bay, it is the most popular boating gateway to Port Phillip Bay. There is plentiful estuary fishing for species such as bream, mullet, Australian Salmon and trevally and well equipped tackle and bait suppliers.

Maribyrnong River
The Maribyrnong River, which begins on the slopes of Mount Macedon and flows to Port Phillip, has played a major role in the occupation and development of western Victoria. Fishing is popular from jetties and fishing platforms alongside parks and reserves on either side of the river.

Birrarrung Park
Located beside the Yarra river, Birrarrung Park is made up of delightful wetlands with a variety of birds and spectacular river scenery. Bring your own bait and drop a line in the Yarra River.

Warrandyte State Park
Dotted with relics of the gold mining era, the hills around Warrandyte have a distinctive bluish-green hue, typical of the foliage of Red Box, a common eucalypt of the area. The Yarra links a number of areas which together form Warrandyte State Park, only 24 km from Melbourne by road. Bring your own bait (digging the river bank for worms is not permitted) and have a relaxing day out fishing here amongst the beautiful scenery.

Yarra Bend Park
At Yarra Bend Park, the largest area of natural vegetation near the City of Melbourne, has over 16 km of river frontage, and superb views of the city and the Dandenongs from the higher areas. You can practice your casting at the international fly-casting pool, or just find a spot to relax while waiting for the fish to bite.

Plenty Gorge Park
Plenty Gorge Park offers a wide diversity of natural and cultural experiences only 20 km from the Melbourne CBD. The spectacular gorge sets a back drop for stunning landscape views and the abundant native wildlife are always on show. Bring your own bait and try your luck at fishing in Blue Lake.
