CFA Ready For Action At Lake Eildon
November 6 2009 - With the 2009/10 Victorian bushfire season officially declared last week, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is ready for action with its new Lake Eildon-based Marine Fire Rescue vessel.

Powered by twin Honda BF225 four-stroke outboards, the customised 9m Stabicraft aluminium vessel has full fire-fighting capabilities thanks to a through-hull water pick-up system capable of pumping 600L of water per minute.

CFA project officer David Goldfinch said the new vessel would play a vital role in the Eildon region this summer, which was devastated during the Black Saturday bushfires earlier this year.

“In addition to fighting fires on the water’s edge or from the water itself, the vessel will also support on-land operations in the area,” Mr Goldfinch said.

“The vessel can transport firefighters to areas inaccessible by road, has the ability to go right up against the shore to deploy crew quickly via a folding bow ramp, and can also operate as a reliable rescue vessel.”

With a fuel capacity of 300L and the ability to carry up to six people, the powerful V6 Honda engines deliver an approximate top speed of 75km/h, which will allow a response team to attend incidents as soon as they’re identified.

“In trial runs with the boat fully-loaded with fuel, fire-fighting equipment and with four people onboard, the vessel’s performance was 120 per cent better than we’d expected,” Mr Goldfinch said.

“The CFA is confident the Eildon region will be very well served with the latest addition to its arsenal… you can never have enough tools in the fight against bushfires.”

Based at Eildon Boat Club, the CFA’s new Marine Fire Rescue vessel would not have been possible with the assistance of Marine Safety Victoria, Honda Australia, MY Marine and various other organisations.

Honda Helps Bushfire Victim Rebuild Life
October 6, 2009 - Honda, Stacer and Victorian dealer New World Honda Marine recently teamed up with insurance provider Club Marine to replace a family’s boat which was destroyed earlier this year in the Black Saturday bushfires.

Former Flowerdale resident David O’Halloran and his family lost everything in the fires, escaping with only the clothes on their backs.

Taking delivering of a new Honda BF60-powered Stacer 479 SunMaster over the weekend, Mr O’Halloran said the new boat would play a significant role in the family’s on-going recovery process.

“I’d taken our five-year-old on our first ‘father-son’ camping trip over Christmas, then just a few weeks later the fires completely changed our lives,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“The young bloke has been nagging me since to take him fishing again… it’s just far too much for a young child to comprehend that we’d lost everything.

“Thanks to all involved, we plan to take our new boat to Lake Eildon or the Western lakes in the next few weeks and hopefully catch a few trout.”

New Marine Engine Industry Representative Body Formed
25 August, 2009 - A marine engine industry representative body was formed today to represent major industry players who are unequivocally committed to sustainable boating practices.

The Australian Marine Engine Council Inc. (AMEC) was formed by key industry representatives as a result of the growing discontent with some of the Outboard Engine Distributors Association (OEDA) member’s inability to commit to sustainable boating practices.

AMEC was launched with a clear and defined strategy to further promote a sustainable marine industry, also including gasoline sterndrive and diesel engine manufacturers committed to the environment and industry.

The foundation member companies involve distributors and factory representatives of iconic brands including BRP Evinrude®, Honda, Suzuki, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Skeeter, Torqeedo and EFFA.

AMEC’s five point plan states that AMEC will;

Align Australian Industry with World Environmental standards
Promote clean technologies to consumers
Promote sustainable recreational fishing activities
Work with both State and Federal Governments to find solutions in marine park management strategies
Support other industry based associations towards sustainable boating.
AMEC spokesperson, David Heyes commented:

“Failure within the previous association memberships to develop a unified approach and a common strategy towards positive outcomes for the boating community has made the way clear for environmentally responsible companies to make positive and honest representations to the public and Government agencies.

“According to the Cost Benefit Analysis report (2007) there is substantial evidence to suggest that old technology high emission engines are heavily polluting Australian waters. As an industry body we fully support the introduction of emissions standards in order to protect the environment for future generations. We want to work with key regulators to achieve a more sustainable industry and a better marine environment from the phasing out of old technology.

“Australia is already 10 years behind world best practice and as key participants in the industry; we can no longer stand by passively while other members are unable to show their commitment to protecting our environment”.

AMEC is committed to working with industry and government to achieve sustainable emission standards as soon as practical.

AMEC spokesperson, David Heyes concluded: "We are committed to an industry body that is focused on a sustainable future and which will work to achieve a better environment for future generations. Australia’s marine industry has been fragmented for too long and a unified, focused and strategic approach is needed.

“We look forward to welcoming other likeminded stakeholders within the marine industry in the very near future".

Honda Stands Firm On Environmental Promise
21 August 2009 Honda has resigned from Australia’s marine engine representative body, the Outboard Engine Distributors Association (OEDA).

The departure of the world’s largest engine manufacturer came on the same day as two other marine engine brands also withdrew their support of the troubled industry organisation.

Honda Australia Managing Director Stuart Strickland said Honda was displeased with the manner in which recent matters had been handled within OEDA.

"Honda has always been, and will always be, at the forefront of environmental issues," Mr Strickland said.

"It is Honda’s opinion that recent manoeuvring by some OEDA members clearly indicates the basic strategy is to push back emission regulations as far as possible.

"This is completely against Honda’s corporate stance… it is Honda’s mission ‘to be a company that society will want to exist’ and being considerate towards the marine environment with low-emission products is a step in this direction.

"Honda is uncomfortable being associated with a group that appears to ignore the basic premise of corporate and social responsibility… and is looking forward to working with the Federal Government in regard to emissions regulations."

Honda’s commitment to first-class marine engine technology dates back to the production of its very first outboard engine in 1964 and can be found in the words of Mr Soichiro Honda, when he gave the following directive to Honda staff:

"Two things are most important: If they are not reliable, people’s lives can be endangered. Second – water cleanliness. What will happen to our oceans, lakes and rivers if all that exhaust gas mixed with oil gets pumped into the water? I don’t care if everyone else is making two-strokes – Honda has to make four-strokes."

Honda’s environmental commitment extends to all facets of its global business, as detailed in its environmental policy statement (excerpt below), established and announced in June 1992:

Honda Environment Statement:

As a responsible member of society whose task lies in the preservation of the global environment, the company will make every effort to contribute to human health and the preservation of the global environment in each phase of its corporate activity. Only in this way will we be able to count on a successful future not only for our company, but for the entire world.

Principle 3 – As both a member of the company and of society, each employee will focus on the importance of making efforts to preserve human health and the global environment, and will do his or her part to ensure that the company as a whole acts responsibly.
